A Humorous Look at the Bright Side of Cancer... and There Is One

February 4, 2010

Sure, I’m Smiling Now…

During my first Herceptin infusion, I was smiling away, banking on the fact that so many nurses told me it was going to be a “cakewalk” compared to the “Red Devil” chemotherapy I’ve had in the past.

Two days later, after the constant nausea (thought I was all done with that) and the fatigue (which I can put up with more than the nausea), I’m thinking to myself: I get it… they’re talking Devil’s Food Cake.

  1. HI Marie,

I work at Cascade Bank & heard about what’s going on with you. Not sure you remember me but I purchased a few lovely bouquets from you last year. Anyway, I asked Ken how you were doing today and he mentioned your blog. I’ve never gone onto anyone’s blog before but was glad to have found yours. I read your bio, books, poetry and some of your blogs. Just wanted to share that I had Hodgkins Disease (cancer of the lymph nodes) in 1985 when I was 23 and had 9 weeks of radiation. Then in 2007, diagnosed w/Thyroid cancer. Took a radioactive iodine pill, husband and kids stayed at my in-laws for a week so that they weren’t exposed, my husband a science nerd, bought a geiger counter and daily stopped by to track my radioactivity.
Anyway, all is good now, as it will be for you. Love the hat/bandana you are wearing and glad that you are smiling.
Please, if you ever need to just talk, whatever, I’d love to meet you for coffee or something or just email chat.
    Best wishes,
    Barbra Hyman

  2. Never been fond of Devil’s Food Cake myself. (It’s a chocolate and me thing.) I hope that you’re done with it as quickly and painlessly as possible. At least Ken hasn’t had to buy a geiger counter yet.
