Kicking the Sugar Habit

During my last trip to the naturopath, the subject turned to sugar. “You do realize I read your blog, right?” Haley asked me with a smile.

“Yikes. In other words, you know about the Haribo licorice, Mentos, and ice cream I used to eat for nausea. I don’t eat all that stuff anymore.” I figured it would not be a good time to bring up the Dark Chocolate Covered Caramels from Trader Joe’s.

“Cancer feeds on sugar and you just can’t eat it,” she admonished.

I resolved to give the “Impossible Diet” another try. I really do like and respect Haley and want to please her. It didn’t hurt that my husband and I plan a trip to Maui for our 20th anniversary and it would be nice to lose 10-15 pounds for that occasion.

For eight (very long) days, I didn’t eat any sugar and lost four pounds.

Today, I made cream puffs for my daughter’s friends that were coming over for a Rook tournament. I picked one up and began psycho-analyzing it. This little morsel of goodness could actually kill me? Do I care?

I used to have a positive attitude about this whole cancer business. This past week, however, I’m getting a bit pessimistic: No more baking? No more ice cream… ever?

Besides, I’ve never smoked (okay, one cigarette when I was 17), don’t drink alcohol, loathe coffee, don’t do fast food, never drink pop… and I still got cancer. Other people I know smoke packs of cigarettes a day, drink buckets of coffee, mainline pop, adore fast food, don’t know what a vegetable is, and they seem to be in good health. Makes a person wonder…

Of course, I don’t wish cancer upon all my easy-going friends; I’m just trying to weigh the fact that I know sugar is not exactly good for me versus the fact that Trader Joe’s caramels just plain MAKE ME HAPPY.

  1. Remind your doctor (politely) that attitude is also a component of illness (that whole mind-body connection.)

    Happy is good.

And now I want some caramels!

  2. If you ever have some sugar that’s tempting you, and you need to remove the temptation ASAP, remember I’m just a phone call away. :)

  3. well you know my thoughts on the food thing. Sometimes I get so tired of the American way….have incredible blessings, wealth, food choices beyond belief and we have the audacity to view food as a curse – I figure maybe we should all move to Haiti for a few months, – I have a hunch our tune would change. On the other hand – everything in moderation. So have 1 Trader Joe’s caramel chocolate, enjoy and then be done with it, but don’t beat yourself up. If you were living on a steady diet of sugar I’d raise my eyebrows. Besides, the health gurus say chocolate is an antioxidant- they WANT you to eat it- and how in the world can you eat it without sugar?? stay strong

  4. Yay! It looks like I’m not the only sugar addict in the world… it’s nice to have good friends!

  6. Cathy,
I was planning on going there on Thursday after my Herceptin appointment, but now that the naturopath has me feeling all guilty if I eat a THING with sugar, I better go to the food co-op instead and find a nice low-priced cauliflower.
