To Reconstruct Or Not To Reconstruct

Trying to figure out one’s hair style  after it starts growing back in after chemotherapy is one thing; having to decide whether or not to do breast reconstruction after a mastectomy is quite another.

I’ve got nine days left to dwell on this subject, but I’ve pretty much made up my mind not to do it. Many women before me have had to face the same reality on this subject for various reasons. My reasoning for not doing reconstruction, however, is very simple:

Why would I want a perky boob (the new one) to compete with the other one that will start sagging as I get older?

  1. Time my friend …. time. There are definitely options that one can make while not being “under the gun” and dealing with what’s really important at this time. Take it from me who said from the get go to my docs …”I don’t want to hear anything about recon” ….. time does heal the mind and body and after it’s said and done, you have the con !

I may not be checking in too much in the next week or two …. as my “recon surgery” is this Thurs, but believe me … you’ll continue through the next phase of your journey and come out on the other end with your positive spirit shining strong !!!! Be well … Carol

  2. Hey Marie,

I’m not sure I have much to add to this particular discussion, I just wanted to be the first to comment. But I see Carol already beat me to that as well. So… I’m number two! Woohoo. Good thing it’s not a competition. :)
