A Humorous Look at the Bright Side of Cancer... and There Is One

May 29, 2012

Ways To Embarass Your Kids #1

Jonathan had his friend, James, over today since it’s Memorial Day and they didn’t have to go to school.
He walked by the kitchen and I pounced. “Jonathan, can you take out this recycling for me?”
As I handed him the liquid soap bottle, the Partylite candle box, and the Cheerios box, he jumped up and down (I guess he was excited to help me) and began to sing: “Do your boobs hang low, do they wobble to and fro, do they…”
Maybe I should explain. First of all, he’s a young teenaged boy: of course he’s thinking about boobies. But, that’s not why he was singing it (I don’t think). He was singing it because this little ditty was written on the front of my mom’s birthday card just a few short weeks ago.
“Hey, Jonathan, one of my boobs hangs low and the other one doesn’t. Get it?” I pointed to my one fake boob, courtesy of the plastic surgeon last June. “Oh. James is… right around… the corner…  isn’t he?”
“Yes.”
I popped my head around the side of the fridge. “Uh… hi, James. Um, what can I say? Sometimes when a person gets cancer, the sick humor comes out in droves.”
I would say it was awkward, but it wasn’t. All three of us were laughing too hard. And singing.
