A Humorous Look at the Bright Side of Cancer... and There Is One

October 26, 2011

Breast Cancer Awareness #3

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and every year, I make a list of ten reasons why I’m personally aware of breast cancer:

1. I rejoice every time I shave my legs. I am a normal person with hair.

2. I have a gazillion hats and scarves for when I was bald.

3. The other day, I bought new mascara and I was beside myself with joy that I have eyelashes to put it on.

4. People keep telling me lately that my hair looks “wonderful” and I always take a step back. Did I look that bad before? First bald, then gray and curly…

5. I just clean toilets now for a “living” instead of puking into them.

6. The Tylenol and Ibuprofen bottles are getting dusty in the cabinet as I no longer need them for pain.

7. My social life now consists of playing volleyball, hiking, and playing games with friends instead of driving to chemo appointments with my drivers.

8. My liver likes me again since I take better care of it. (No more Lapatinib for me.)

9. Instead of buying new clothes or fun items, I’m paying for all the work I’ve had done on my body (mastectomy, chemo, newly-made breast) in the past few years.

10. My fake boob is sitting on a shelf in my closet and I still don’t know what to do with it.
