A Humorous Look at the Bright Side of Cancer... and There Is One

That’s Not Something You Hear Every Day #17

A few days ago, Ken and I had one of the widow ladies from our church over for dinner. We’ll call her Betty.

After a delicious dinner of mashed potatoes, meatballs, peas, and my “famous” gravy, we retired to the living room for homemade coconut popsicles. The conversation turned to entertainment.

“Hey, Betty, do you ever go see movies?” I asked her. “We should go sometime.”

“Yes, I do. I want to go see that new one with Meryl Streep.”

“Oh, I thought maybe you’d want to go see ‘Magic Mike’ instead,” I teased her. “It’s a movie about strippers. Matthew McConaughey is in it.” Oh boy. Why did I say that? I’m probably going to offend her. She is, after all, a widow lady, missing her husband… she’s older…

“Let’s go,” she interrupted my thoughts. “Matthew McConaughey can strip for me any day.”

  1. Okay, that’s hilarious. Both your thoughts about what you said (because I say stuff all the time and wish later that I had NOT…) AND the response from, uh, “Betty”. Now I am just waiting to see where Ken took you for your date tonight after the soccer game (where Jonathon played like a pro)… And if it was Burger King, then you and I are going out next time and the boys can swim their way home through traffic on their own.

  2. One more thing: you are starting to not look anything like your book photo (currently also on this blog). Your hair is longer and blonder now. (Red still looks great on you. Ya got that goin on.) I was getting ready to sign out when I glanced at it and thought, “Who IS that?” Of course I know it’s you, but is it STILL you? Hmmm…. Maybe you need a 1 year anniversary (boob anniversary) photo or something? Just the face. We don’t want to stare or anything… did I mention I say things I regret…?

  3. Bon,

Ken actually took me to Applebee’s and not McDonald’s. Can you believe it?

The only thing is, they messed up our order three times (cold food, wrong food, more cold food) so we got the whole meal for free. So, food wasn’t good, but the Dutch people that we are, we did not turn down the offer and tipped our waiter very well (it wasn’t his fault).

  4. B-

I know. I know. What can I say? I am the world’s worst photogenic person and hate having pictures taken of myself. I will have to get Adriana to work some of her magic and take a new one.

One of these days… in my spare time… when I’ve lost 50 pounds… next spring… blah, blah, blah…
