A Humorous Look at the Bright Side of Cancer... and There Is One

It’s Hard To Be A Woman #7

03_15_2013_cancer_funny_laundry_soapThis morning was clear and sunny. I ran into the dining room where Ken was working on his laptop. “Hey, honey, I can do a load of laundry, don’t you think?” Please, please, can I?

“Sure, I think you’ll be okay.” For those of you who have forgotten, if I do laundry during the rainy days of winter, the water ends up all over my bathroom floor instead of in the septic tank.

I retrieved the dirty clothes that had been piling up in our bedroom hamper, separated the colors, and placed the dark clothes into the washing machine. I opened up the cupboard that housed all of my cleaning supplies. Crap. Out of homemade laundry soap.

I’m so behind the eight-ball lately. I can’t get caught up on bills, I rarely get dinner on the table anymore, the kitchen is always full of unwashed dishes, I can’t remember the last time I vacuumed the floor. Now, today I’m adding “Make another batch of homemade laundry soap” to my list of things to do.

I assembled the cheese grater, the Fels-Naptha soap, Borax, washing soda, and VitaMix dry container.

I couldn’t figure out for the life of me what I was going to put it in. The last container had been way too small. I wandered around the house looking for something I could use. Good grief. All I want to do is get caught up on the bloody laundry. How about this Mason jar? No, I won’t be able to get a scoop in there easily. Ahhhhhh….

I finally settled on my protein shake container that was almost empty. I was so proud of myself for this ingenious plan. It had only taken me twenty minutes to come up with.

In between phone calls, scrambling to pay the bills, and cleaning up the kitchen, the soap was finally made–a double batch–so I’m all set for a few more months. Now, the only thing I have left to do is: GO GET A LIFE.

  1. sheesh Marie…. if you cant do laundry in rainy weather it’s no wonder you’re behind…. my recollection is that it rains pretty frequently on your side of the mountains….

  2. Ria,

You ain’t kidding. We had a dry run of weather (yay!) and I got caught up on all of the laundry. Then, it rained for a week. I am now debating on how much of a chance I want to take by doing laundry at home instead of going to the (creepy) Laundromat. An exciting life I lead, eh?

Actually, I have great news. Remember how I told you the last time we talked that we were going to consult a builder about whether or not we should bulldoze our house and start over? He assured us that we just need to remodel the existing house where it is. Yippee!

  3. Julie,

I’m impressed that I make my own soap, too. Lately, anyway.

I’ve only been able to accomplish this feat by letting go of my hiking. (I saw that picture of you hugging that tree on your hike–love that picture–and I had a few twinges of guilt.)

Hopefully, in a few short weeks, I’ll be able to have it all: make my own soap, hike, have the yard whipped into shape, write another book…
