A Humorous Look at the Bright Side of Cancer... and There Is One

Dear Fran,

How are you? I’m feeling a little down today. A bit more of that survivor’s guilt. Do you ever get that? You’ve been through cancer yourself.

One of my friends is dealing with the spread of cancer to her lungs, liver, stomach, and brain: just about everywhere that cancer can spread. Another one of my friends is burying her husband this weekend. He struggled through prostate cancer and the resultant excruciating bone pain for over seven years.

Me? I’m too busy worrying about the ten pounds I gained back from eating too much pizza and other processed food during our remodel and playing with the dimmer switch on the new sparkly mercury-glass pendants now hanging above my huge new kitchen island.

What is wrong with me? How did I get so lucky? I’m fulfilling my bucket list while friends of mine are hanging on by a thin thread.

I will try to be in a better mood the next time I write you.

Best friends always,

Marie

  1. For as long as you are on this earth, God has work for you to do; sometimes, the work you have to do is passive. You do God’s work by the attitude you have…by allowing others to see what having faith is really all about. Your friends who are “hanging on by a thread” do not begrudge your success. And they are blessed every single day by your caring spirit. If you want to get out of your “funk”, go spend some time with those who are struggling now…share your wonderful gift of caring…give them those desperately-needed hugs!!! When you come home, you will be able to enjoy your beautiful new kitchen…knowing you can prepare love-giving foods for your friends…and you’ll share that beautiful kitchen with them as you share a cup of coffee and bless them with your listening. Remember that GOD wants you to be happy!!! Hugs to you, my friend.

  2. Good morning, Penny:

You are very sweet. I would still like to meet you in person. Ken and I are working in the home office today and I just said over my shoulder, “We need to go visit Penny. This summer, we’re doing that.” So, plan on serving me some tea in your kitchen, lady. :)

I really appreciate your words of kindness. Take care until we meet.

  3. I so agree with Penny!

(And I’m not saying this because I’m trying to get you guys to come for tea?!)

    :)

  4. Thanks, Lydia.

We would love to come out for a visit this year or next. We actually talked about it earlier this month.

How are you and the family? I guess I would know if I kept in better contact, eh?

    -Marie
