A Humorous Look at the Bright Side of Cancer... and There Is One

The Marie/Maria Project

Decisions

I’ve had to make so many decisions during this journey through breast cancer. I had another appointment with Dr. Hoffman, the oncologist today, and get to make some more: a) Should I take Femara to help prevent the breast cancer from coming back and add to my list of annoying side effects? b) What day […]

Marie/Maria Project Update #3

Still five pounds down, 45 to go. I think I may be getting lymphedema in my right arm. It’s been swelling and is now one inch bigger than my left arm which should make losing weight that much more interesting. Fluid buildup. Great. Not only will I weigh more, it hurts like the dickens.

Post-Mastectomy Exercise… In Hawaii

I got up this morning at 5:30, put my sweats, tank top, and tennis shoes on, and was on the beach by six. The running/walking was going fine for half an hour until the blisters showed up. I limped back to our room. The great thing is, I plan on doing it all again tomorrow […]

Marie/Maria Project Update #2

I sent a copy of my goal list for the Marie/Maria Project to my naturopath so she could file it in my chart. She has started to call me M&M since I can’t seem to make up my mind what to call myself, so after my “Marie/Maria” signature, I couldn’t resist adding “Schizophrenic Obsessed Weight-watcher”. […]

Marie/Maria Project Update #1

Well, my Marie/Maria Project is off to a good start. I had a check-up with the doctor yesterday and the result (with my new fake boob being included in the weigh-in) was… Five pounds down, 45 to go.

Split Personality

Why is my new idea called the Marie/Maria Project? Because I’m schizophrenic: Marie: “I can lose 50 pounds in five months.” Maria: “Who ya kidding? You can’t lose five pounds to save your life.” Marie: “I’ve consumed 1500 calories per day all week. Be positive.” Maria: “You still gained four pounds. Why should you bother?” […]

The Marie/Maria Project

I watched Julie & Julia the other night, finally. What can I say? I’ve been a little busy with Herceptin, doctor appointments, and writing a book. If you haven’t seen this movie, it is based on the true story of a woman named Julie that decided to blog about tackling Julia Child’s Mastering the Art […]

Role Reversal

Last week, I picked up Jonathan from school and the second he got in the car, he asked, “Hey, can we go to Mexico Cafe’?” I immediately began to drool and dream of nachos and the best salsa in the world. “Uh, we, well… um… I just went to the naturopath and we… ” I plunged […]

Treat The Whole Person

Yesterday, in meeting with my naturopath, Haley, it was time for my monthly weigh-in. I made sure to go to the bathroom first, removed my shoes, took my coat off, and sure enough, I had still gained seven pounds. I knew I had partied a little too hard on our trip to the Oregon coast […]
