A Humorous Look at the Bright Side of Cancer... and There Is One

October 9, 2009

Breast Cancer Awareness #1

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

I’m not sure how other “high-risk” HER2/neu breast cancer patients feel, but there are at least ten reasons why I am aware of the fact that I have this, whether or not it’s October:

1. I am bald.

2. Yesterday, I had Benadryl for breakfast.

3. I am usually aware of the nearest toilet.

4. I have tried pot (twice) and am now taking steroids—both legally—to deal with chemotherapy symptoms.

5. I’ve consumed more Tylenol and Ibuprofen in the past six months than during my previous 41 years.

6. My social life consists of visiting chemo nurses or with my drivers.

7. I am very conscious of time: 4 more months of this, 4 more months till that, I hope I live to see 45…

8. Chemotherapy is forcing my body into early menopause and it’s the least of my worries right now.

9. I no longer take my breasts for granted. After January, I will only have one left.

10. Pure coconut oil works the best for my facial rash caused by Lapatinib.

  1. Obviously, you don’t need a month to tell you the situation! In fact, you should be writing the promotional materials for them. They could use a few more “top 10” countdowns in their literature…

  2. My computer actually let me into your blog today. Wonders never cease! Hope your having a good day. Thinking of you. How’s that book coming? These blog entries could be a real encouragment for some one someday.

  3. Hi Maria, just been thinking about you lately. It sounds like things are still pretty rough for you. It sounds like you got back into piano lessons, good for you, hopefully it will work out for us again someday. Are you enjoying your new bathroom? Our kitchen is almost done, next Monday we are supposed to get our countertops. It will be wonderful to get a sink again. If you ever feel up to it the lunch offer still stands. Take care, Maria…still praying for you.
