A Humorous Look at the Bright Side of Cancer... and There Is One

September 30, 2012

That’s Not Something You Read Every Day #3

I’m thinking people in the United Kingdom have entirely too much time on their hands. Not enough time, however, to read the subtitle of my book: “Cancer Is A Funny Thing: A Humorous Look At the Bright Side of Cancer… And There Is One.”

A few Brits left me the following posts on my business Facebook account (since deleted in case you try to look them up):

One gentleman wrote “every single one of you is sik wankers millions of people die from this horrible disease and you think its a joke i hope all of you get cancer then we will see if its funny.” (sic) Well, I did have cancer – and subsequent morbid humor – hence the book. As for him, maybe he could look into taking a grammar class.

One woman called me a “Sick Low Life Scumbag” (sic) and wanted to know “How The [Bleep] Is Cancer Funny!! Get A Life You Need Killed.” (sic) Hm… I guess writing about my personal experience with cancer makes me worthy of death. Apparently, She Likes Capital Letters. A Lot.

  1. You can please some of your readers all of the time, and all of your readers some of the time, but you can’t please the nitwits.

  2. I am sorry about those comments. I wondered if people might not “get it” at first… the title IS supposed to get their attention, and the book is supposed to add some whacked-out, light-hearted attitude toward something VERY scary. I don’t know if you can reply to them with some compassion, because they have probably hurt and lost loved ones. They just didn’t see you are trying to help. And we can pray for those hurting people, hurt so much they chose to be horrible to you. Sorry, Marie. Hang in there!

  3. Bon,

I know that people get angry about their loved ones dying and lash out at me. I don’t lose sleep over it.

As if I haven’t lost loved ones to cancer or gone through treatment myself.

Guess I can’t help being an optimist. I try to look on the bright side of things as much as possible. Makes life a little easier…

  4. So true! That’s the POINT of your book! That in something so horrible you have managed to find some humor. In the IMPOSSIBLE you found humor. That is the point. And I so admire you for it!!!
