A Humorous Look at the Bright Side of Cancer... and There Is One

June 29, 2013

That’s Not Something You Hear Every Day #20

There’s Facebook. There’s Twitter. Then, there’s Myspace, LinkedIn, and Instagram. I’ve heard people mention Spotify and Snapchat, Pandora and Pinterest. I don’t know what Tumblr is, but I always want to throw an “e” in there.

I don’t care about most of the above or the 800 other things people keep insisting I’m missing out on. I can barely keep up with my simple life as it is.

This evening, I was furiously trying to get all of the dishes done after the long, hot day in the sun.

The potatoes were peeled, the gravy was simmering on the stove, and the meatballs were almost done. Ken would be home any minute. I calmly wiped yet another plate with soapy water, rinsed it, and stood it up in the dish drain.

I heard a sharp sound behind me. “Boo!” Jonathan screamed toward the back of my head.

“STOP THAT!” I yelped.

“Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha,” he cried as he skipped away, happy that he had managed to record his mama having a near heart attack on his iPod.

I chased him into the living room and pointed my finger at his face: “You snapchat that and I’m going to kill you.”

  1. Oh Mrs. de Haan,
This gave me quite a laugh. You are not alone in the baffling world of social media. I can hardly keep up with it myself. Oh and I can totally see Jonathan doing this…He is quite the character. Never a dull moment with him.

  2. Laura!

    Great to hear from you.

Jonathan probably snapchatted that video to you, didn’t he. I’m sure I looked like a complete dork. Kind of hard not to when you’re getting the wits scared out of you. He actually scared me twice, so my nerves were pretty shot by the time I told him I was going to kill him. (I’m so motherly, aren’t I?)

You’ve got that right… never a dull moment with Jonathan.

You haven’t gone on your trip yet, have you? I wish you a safe, productive trip.

-Marie (Mrs. deHaan is my mother-in-law – ha!)

  3. How about Mrs. Marie?

You know I don’t think that Jonathan and I are friends on snap chat…But I can totally imagine it in my mind…Oh he got you twice! That takes talent…or a mother who is not paying close attention to the whereabouts of her youngest son. (Always be on the look out. Us kids have to take it when the opportunity presents itself.)

I haven’t gone on my trip yet…I leave Sunday. Question. Do you all like coffee?

    ~Laura

  4. Laura,

If you feel more comfortable calling me Mrs. deHaan, that’s fine with me. If you’d rather call me Mrs. Marie, that works, too. You can pretty much call me whatever you want, as long as it’s nice – ha!

That kid gets me twice a week. Hopefully, when we get our kitchen remodeled and it’s more open (rather than a dingy little hole in the wall), I’ll see him coming. One could always hope. My heart can’t take much more excitement of being scared out of my wits.

You leave Sunday, eh? Well, have a very safe trip and a good time.

Everyone in the family, except me, likes coffee. And I have been known to add a little Big Train Mocha Mix to my homemade chocolate malts, so I must like coffee a little bit. I prefer to eat my caffeine in the form of dark chocolate or Haagen-Dazs Rocky Road ice cream. :)

  5. Mrs. Marie, (I like the sound of that.)

I had no idea you were getting your kitchen remodeled. How exciting! All my life I have grown up in houses that were being remodeled…my favorite part of the kitchen is the new cabinets. I use to sit in them while my dad put them together, handing him the next screw, but mostly just being in his way…haha

Thank you so much for your support. A terrible thing happened today. My youth pastor rolled his ankle playing capture the flag. Just three days before we leave. I know the Lord does amazing things and can heal him. It would mean a lot to know that people were praying for him and our whole team.

Ok. I would like to bring everyone who supported me a little something from Guatemala. I hear they have amazing coffee. So I will have to make room in my suit case to bring it all back.

  6. Laura,

Well, the remodeling hasn’t happened yet. I have a blog post that I haven’t quite finished yet that will explain why. (“Stay tuned for more exciting stuff happening at the deHaan household.”)

I’ll be excited when we get to the cabinet-ordering stage. I’ll order them, but I don’t think I should try to crawl into them. I’m a bit bigger than you and will get stuck. Who will keep up my cancer blog then? :)

Oh dear, I hope that your youth pastor can heal quickly and make the trip with you.

We will never turn down coffee here. We might even make some coconut popsicles to go with it. And invite people over to tell us all about Guatemala.

    -Mrs. Marie

  7. I am always willing to take time out my schedule when promised coconut popsicles! I have gifts and tons of stories to share.

  8. Laura,

Let me know when. I just defrosted the freezer last week (Ugh) and forgot to put my Zoku popsicle maker back in the freezer for a few days. Not good in this heat. It’s all good now, though.

    See you soon.

    -Mrs. Marie
