A Humorous Look at the Bright Side of Cancer... and There Is One

February 12, 2013

Marie/Maria Project Update #6

02_12_2013_cancer_funny_hiking_lose_weightI don’t know what I was talking about when I said I wasn’t working very hard on losing weight.

Adriana and I went hiking this morning. She meandered along, young whipper-snapper that she is, while I panted and paused and almost passed out on the way up. To make matters worse, now that she’s taking a nutrition class at the local community college as part of her schooling, I got to hear some more about how bad it is for a person to be overweight.

“Okay, Adriana… pant… I know all this stuff… yes, I know who Dr. Ornish is… pant, pant… he’s a heart doctor that got sick of patching up people instead of… holy cow, it’s hard to talk and walk at the same time… by the way, why did you give me such a hard time when you were a little kid… pant… and I wouldn’t buy you Cocoa Puffs for breakfast?… I wasn’t such a bad parent after all, was I?”

As we kept walking, Adriana turned to me and said, “Sixty-seven days.”

I replied. “That’s… uh… nice?”

“Sixty-seven days until we go to Maui.”

“Sixty-seven…why does that number sound so familiar?” I asked her. Then I remembered. When I started this hare-brained Marie/Maria Project, I estimated that I would lose “67 pounds in 10 years.” Maybe instead of 67 pounds in 10 years, I can lose 10 pounds in 67 days.

For now, I’m happy to report 15 pounds lost, 35 pounds to go.

And, it is really seventy days until we leave for Maui. Guess Adriana should take some additional mathematics classes in addition to her nutrition classes.

  1. Congratulations on your lbs lost! So awesome! STILL can’t see your hair! 10lbs in 67 days is a great goal too. I have been thinking lately… we either gain or lose. “Maintenance” is non-existent, at least for foodies like me. Since you know all the cool hiking areas, call me if you want to go to a place where a 6 and 7 year old can hike along and not fall off a cliff. I miss laughing with you!

  2. Bon,

Thanks. Why can’t you see my hair? Besides in this picture, I mean. Are you talking about the new color? It’s back a few posts.

There are all kinds of places to hike with kids. I’ll call you. Haven’t seen you in forever, not since the old soccer days.
